Part of a $65 million makeover, The QT Hotel which opened on the busiest corner of the CBD in September 2012, was completely design-driven. The QT’s five-star quirkiness borders reflecting its theatrical heritage and drawing celebrity visitors.

Many original features were retained and improved – a juxtaposition for the throbbing light installations, dressmakers mannequins and neon-coloured furniture decorating the hallways and reception. A New York vibe prevails while, in the basement, a French barber provides traditional cut and shaves in antique barber’s chairs.

There’s 12 styles of room. They range from hardwood-floored funky loft in the old suit department of the Gowings bit, to the stately lux presidential suite on the theatre side of the hotel.

The design team behind the project spent 18-months gathering objects d’art at auctions, on eBay and even council clean-ups to achieve the quirky look designed to reflect the original use of the heritage buildings as well as adding an in-your-face modern flourish.

Mint Floors & Shutters was recommended to do the flooring, and here is a summary of what we did on this 4500m2 project…

In the hotel rooms (suites) in the old Gowings building we re-furbished all the existing heritage listed timber floors from the old building. They were all existing Australian hardwood floors called Tallowood. We sanded and coated them with a clear oil modified urethane – with a “satin” sheen.

The restaurant area now called “Gowings Bar & Grill” had new Australian Spotted Gum Hardwood floors installed and then stained black and coated with Oil Modified Urethane clear satin finish over the top.

The Hotel Foyer has Aussie Ironbark hardwood floors also stained black and coated. Solid Stair treads fitted to steel frames also.

The Lounge bar upstairs from Restaurant has Quick Step Palazzo “Mocha Oak” engineered flooring. Installed on rubber sound insulation underlay.
